The Farm Service Agency's (FSA) office in Newton County, Indiana, recently joined with Purdue Cooperative Extension to plant the agency's People's Gardens.

The gardens, located at the annex building of the Newton County Courthouse and the Morocco Methodist Chuch, are designed to teach elementary school children and members of the Women, Infant and Children (WIC) initiative about agricultural practices.

A first plot will instruct third graders about planting, gathering up crops and preparing food from the harvested plants. A second garden area will be tended by fourth graders taking part in a Junior Master Gardener Program. The third plot will educate WIC participants on the nutritional values of different vegetables.

Supplies, including a rain barrel, were donated by approximately 10 businesses and individuals, and funds generated from the People's Garden will go toward local charities' food banks.
