Farm-City Week encourages connection between urbanites, farmers

Many people in urban areas may feel a disconnect when it comes to those who use farm equipment to provide city folk with food.

However, a national program aims at trying to show people in cities what it takes to produce the food that ends up in their kitchens. November 20-26 marked National Farm-City Week, which is a program designed by the National Farm-City Council.

States across the country mark the celebration, including Pennsylvania, where Governor Edward Rendell declared "Farm-City Week" in the state. Rendell noted that farmers have a great responsibility in providing food, saying that one farmer in the state produces enough to feed 155 people.

"Pennsylvania's agriculture industry provides a safe and abundant food supply for the state's 12.5 million citizens in urban, suburban and rural communities," Redding said at a recent event in Center City Philadelphia.

A mobile science lab was set up in Center City Philadelphia by the Friends of Agriculture Foundation. The lab allows people to do hands-on experiments that teach them about the activities of those who use agricultural equipment.
