In a move that could send construction equipment moving in the North Woods of Maine, a resort and residential development got unanimous approval from a state planning board.

According to the Associated Press, Seattle-based Plum Creek Timber Co.'s proposal was approved five years after the company first announced the plan. If built, the plan would bring two resorts and 2,000 housing units to the area.

"Even with the state Land Use Regulation Commission's approval, it could be years before construction begins," the AP report noted. "Plum Creek would need to win permits for construction, and opponents said they intend to file a lawsuit to stop the development."

People who were against the development said that it would change the atmosphere of the area, while those for the proposal said it could bring economic development.

According to the U.S. Census Department and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, housing starts were down by 3 percent during August. In all, starts for single-family homes amounted to 479,000 for the month. Building permits for single-family homes also dropped from 463,000 in July to 462,000 in August.
