Used tractors and farm equipment are generally targeted by consumers who are looking to improve their properties or get a particular job done.

However, a recent report from Missouri's Memphis Democrat noted that thieves are also looking to try and steal tractors in order to turn a profit at scrap yards. According to the paper, area law enforcement officials are investigating cases involving aluminum wheels, a tractor and air conditioners being swiped.

"The thefts are believed to have occurred at odd hours of the night," the newspaper said. "Investigators are encouraging property owners that may have such items to review their property to insure nothing has been stolen."

Tougher economic conditions may have caused some people to resort to illegal means to try and make a buck. Stealing metal objects has become more popular over the last few years, as the price for things like copper and aluminum have seen increases.

Incidents of thefts have been reported across the country. Some criminals have also targeted the wiring in farm equipment along with stealing pieces from irrigation systems.
