Consumers who have used tractors to care for their lawns in the past probably know how important it is to have their machines ready for that first spring trimming.

Now, according to a recent report from college newspaper the Columbia Missourian, students at the University of Missouri-Columbia are going to help people in the area get their lawn mowers prepared.

The service comes care of the school's Agricultural Systems Management Club, which is trying to raise money for its activities, which include field trips.

"For $30, students will sharpen the blade, change the oil, power wash the mowers, clean air filters and replace the spark plug," the paper said. "If any shop labor is required, there will be an additional $30 per hour charge."

In order to qualify for the service, machines must be in working order, and the club will not work on riding mowers.

Tractor owners who are interested in the service can drop off their machines on March 11 and 12 at the eastern end of the school's Agricultural Engineering Building.

While their machines are being prepared, homeowners may consider getting a jump on some of the springtime duties associated with having a lawn. That would include clearing any debris while being careful to not tread on portions of the yard that are very wet.
