Restored Deere tractors shine in ag event's pull

The Old-Time Tractor Pull at the North Dakota Winter Show in Jamestown attracted participants who were markedly younger than their John Deere machinery, which they rarely use for farming.

Rather, people like Lyle Zachmeier of Mandan said he really enjoys competing in the event, according to a published report. He does so with a 1952 John Deere Model G that he restored after rescuing it from a garbage heap.

"I don’t farm so this is all we use it for. It's kind of my way to spend time," Zachmeier told the Jamestown Sun. "It's a great hobby. I try to come here every year."

Sam Bell, 15, of Gardner, competes with a machine four times his age. The John Deere Model A , a 60-year-old machine, helps him with chores, responsibilities and other tasks but he primarily uses it when competing in tractor pulls.

"My uncle pulled and I thought it was fun and it keeps me out of trouble," Sam Bell of Gardner said. "I suppose I have about $2,500 invested in the tractor over the years. I've lost track of the hours I’ve worked on it."
