For almost a year now, citizens in Rhode Island have been encouraged to eat foods grown locally by those who use farm equipment in the Ocean State.

The campaign encouraging them to do so is called "Get Fresh. Buy Local." and is being organized by the state's Department of Environmental Management's Division of Agriculture. The effort is made possible by a specialty crop block grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

One focus of the campaign includes encouraging people in Rhode Island to buy the state's specialty crops.

"Specialty crops range from fruits and vegetables to turf, nursery, and horticulture," the department said.

Encouraging locally grown products is part of a general initiative to try and get people in the country to eat healthier foods. The Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food program also works to try and connect consumers with farmers in their regions.

The Rhode Island campaign is also encouraging people get connected with producers in the state. Farmers are getting the opportunity to tell their story through the campaign with the assistance of media outlets.
