The Harrisonburg, Virginia Holiday Parade is different from other holiday parades. This past weekend, the town's residents gathered to watch as cartoon characters, Santa Claus and even some flame-throwing baton twirlers gathered to bring holiday cheer to the town.

This year's parade theme, "Sounds of the Season," was a resounding success with the town. Adults and youngsters alike came together to see such sights as unicyclists tottering down the streets and the infamous Grinch rolling slowly down the street on a John Deere tractor.

Ultimately, the event's organizers hoped it would increase sales at local businesses as many of the parade's floats were produced by them as marketing tools. Local business owner Jane Braithwaite told the James Madison University Breeze that "supporting local business in this holiday season is crucial," noting that increased sales at the stores keeps "your community strong."

At the end of the parade, the town residents rushed to get front-row views of the main spectacle, the Christmas tree lighting. Residents were pleased that the tree was still there as the lights were fired on: many of the town's younger residents were afraid the Grinch would make off with the tree in his John Deere tractor, carrying it away before they were able to enjoy it!
